Autism Art ~ Part II

Art has been a medium of communication since the beginning of time. Sometimes I think that it is the best tool Ben possesses to make himself heard in a world too busy and frantic to really take the time to listen to a young man affected with speech limitations.

Pablo Picasso said : “Bad artists copy; good artists steal.” I am not sure whether Ben can thus be classified as a good artist, but he most certainly love to steal all he can to create on paper a reality that suits him. All his favorite shows, and even ones he has only seen one time, are inspiration for him.

But he also can create more original art to express his feelings. For example he loves to make signs that he posts around the house to celebrate our family’s achievements, homecomings or birthdays.

It’s a way for him to show he cares, deeply, about what happens in his world, and that he is aware of all those events. Art lets him express his joy and happiness. And autism does not hinder his communication through his drawings; Ben has truly found a way to break free! ☺
