Autism and Scoutism

Ben and Keith have been at our church scout camp all week! It was Ben’s 6th year at BSA camp, earning merit badges and learning great new skills. Ben still has a long way before earning his Eagle Scout Award, but at this point, we do not worry about this milestone. We only want Ben to participate as much as he can and enjoy the experience while picking up valuable life skills.

He absolutely loves being outdoors and sleeping under a tent. His dad has to go with him each and every year, because due to wandering issues we do not trust he could manage on his own. And let’s face it, Ben is also highly vulnerable and cannot take care of himself despite being 18 now.

Nonetheless, he enjoys camp and doing as much as the other boys: Throwing tomahawks, archery, shooting rifles, canoeing, swimming in the lake, climbing and just “being a boy”! ☺

I am so grateful that Keith is able to attend with him and make this sacrifice of time, vacation and sleep for Ben…  Ben enjoys it so! Can’t wait to hear what adventures they had this year, and see their pictures! In the meantime, here are a few from years past…
